Drain and Sewer Cleaning.
In many older homes 10-100 years old, the sewer piping may have some cracks or separations in joints or clean out fittings? And that's all it takes. Your tree will send out these small feeder roots that seek out those nutrients and all it takes is a small defect in the piping, and that's all the tree needs. These fine feed roots will work into these small gaps and then begin to grow and grow, then the roots get larger and larger and soon you have a root ball in your sewer.
There are a couple ways of dealing with this situation,
1. Snaking (rooter-ing) this is basically a 3/4" cable with a cutter head at the end, the Plumber runs the cable into the blockage and allows the roots to be tangled into the cutter head and then he yanks the cable to tear the roots enough to allow the blockage to clear. A quality Plumber will work the blade over the blockage multiple times to remove more roots. The inherent problem is the snake cannot completely clean out the roots! there not designed to do so! and when the roots are yanked free if the pipe is compromised the line could collapse.
2. Hydro-jetting, this is a specialty process where a high pressure water hose is sent down the sewer line and a special nozzle called a wart hog blasts the roots and any grease or accumulation away from the pipe and leaves the pipe sparkling clean. We use a sewer camera in conjunction with the jetter hose to verify the wart hog nozzle is in the correct position to vaporize the root blockage. This works fantastic if you have a clay sewer line where there are multiple root penetrations, this procedure also prepares the sewer line for trench-less sewer pipe replacement!
